Dr. Absalom grew up in South Africa, and studied medicine at the University of Cape Town. He underwent specialist training in anaesthesia and intensive care in England and Scotland, combining his training with research on computer control of anesthesia, and patient controlled sedation, supervised by Prof. Gavin Kenny. He worked as a consultant anaesthetist in Norwich, and then in Cambridge, England, before moving to the Netherlands in 2009, where he has been Professor of Anesthesiology since 2010. His clinical interests are neuroanaesthesia and intravenous anaesthesia techniques. His research interests are in the pharmacology of the anesthetic agents, and neuroscience. He has published >250 peer-reviewed publications on these themes.
Dr. Absalom was an editor of the British Journal of Anaesthesia from 2013 to 2022, and is currently financial director of the BJA Company and of the European Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care. He has been Treasurer and President of the Society for Intravenous Anaesthesia, vice-president of the World SIVA, Chairman of the Neuroanaesthesia Section of the Dutch Association of Anaesthetists and Chair of the General Anaesthesia Scientific Sub-committee of ESAIC.
Dr Mark Barley

Mark is a Consultant Anaesthetist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust where he is both the equipment and airway lead. His clinical interests are anaesthesia for major head and neck surgery, upper GI and emergency surgery.
As the Honorary Secretary of SIVA (the Society For Intravenous Anaesthesia) he is duty bound to be a TIVA DIVA. He’s a keen advocate of personalised anaesthesia for all patients and is regularly evaluating and adopting the latest technologies to optimise care. He is a well known educator both nationally and internationally on TIVA and pEEG topics.

Dr Peter Brooks

Dr Brooks is based at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital in London (since 2004) as a Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist. Over the past decade, he has worked to promote paediatric TIVA in the UK/Europe/US and has assisted others in implementing the technique into their practice. Dr Brooks has previously held the position of Lead Training Program Director at the Imperial School of Anaesthesia in London. Currently, he is a member of the Scientific Committee for the Association of Paediatric Anaesthetists and recently joined the committee of the Society of Intravenous Anaesthesia in the UK. Dr Brooks' training took place in London, and completed fellowships at Great Ormond Street Hospital and at British Columbia's Children's Hospital in Vancouver.

Doctor Alice Humphreys is a consultant anaesthetist currently working in Plymouth. A serving Royal Air Force officer, she lives in Devon with her wife Christine, son Lex and cat Raffles. Alice has specialty interests in neuroanaesthesia, major trauma anaesthesia, transfer & retrieval, TIVA/pEEG and CBRN medicine. In her military role, Alice flies on international retrieval missions for the RAF’s Critical Care Air Support Team, formed part of the first ever adult critical care transfer service in England on Operation RESCRIPT and once accidentally invaded North Cyprus all by herself. She currently serves on the SIVA committee, ESAIC disaster preparedness board and the BMA EDI advisory group, as well as teaching at the University of Plymouth and Defence CBRN Centre. Outside of medicine, Alice is a passionate history, fantasy & science fiction reader, D&D game master and model rocketeer.

Tom is an anaesthetist who trained in the North West and works in Brighton. He is a keen teacher and TIVA enthusiast, and has been involved in a number of primarily FRCA-based teaching projects over the years.
